So, basically, Colorado is West Virginia with money. Beautiful, lush, hilly,
green, and full of latter-day prospectors and revenooers (and 4-wheel drive
vehicles). Our drive from Durango to Pueblo took us through the San Juan and Rio
Grande National Forests on Route 160, up to 10,850 feet.
Americana Sign Watch:
The Mother Lode Inn -- Pig In or Pig Out
The Hitching Post Hotel for Tired Nags
Boogie's Restaurant (who wants to eat boogies??? Ewwwww)
Colorado Potato Administration Committee Headquarters
Mom Lounge (I’ve been trying to figure out what this could be…it looked like a
saloon…but maybe it’s a place for moms to go and have a drink where the room
stays vacuumed or something…?)
The Flying Hog Saloon
Unfug Hardware
Loaf n’ Jug (a 7-Eleven looking place)
Bowl 50’s Diner (bowling alley and 50s diner – what a great combo :)
Heavy Roadside Activity (I have no idea what this means…there wasn’t anything
unusual going on roadside).
The convenience stores sell chocolate-flavored coconut Almond Joys. What’s with
the sudden rush of extra-chocolate-infused candy? First the Kit Kats, then the
York Peppermint Patties, now Almond Joy.
We opted for the “Super Site” when we got to the RV park, and we have our own
deck and whirlpool :) Right now, there’s a storm coming, but I’m hoping it
clears up so we can bubble like a couple of Lean Cuisines in the hot tub. We
have a great view of Pikes Peak in our front yard:

It used to be the symbol for gold seekers heading west, and it's touted as the
most visited mountain in North America and the second most visited mountain in
the world behind Japan's Mount Fuji, but it's kind of anticlimactic, actually,
if you want the truth. The song, "America the Beautiful" was apparently inspired
by Pikes Peak, but the writer must have had a few drinks first. I remember it as
pointier and more dramatic in all those Wile E. Coyote cartoons.
Did see a really cool bird outside this morning and snapped its picture -- check
it out. Anybody know what it is?
