Route:
The drive to Newburgh hugged the crest of the Catskill mountains (dense forests crawling up the mountainfaces thick enough to look like moss from a distance...but no piles of dead mice or birds that you might expect from its name....) My side of the road was all streams and creeks (cricks!) of dribbling water and exposed spines of pebbles bleached white from the intense sun, and clearings with headstones sticking up like so many broken teeth...I guess they figured the dead wouldn't be bothered by the noise of the interstate roaring by. Lots of Queen Anne's lace growing alongside the road, too...made me want to pick it and put it in colored water, but who thinks to pack food coloring on a camping trip??
Americana Sign Watch:
Made the sacred pilgrimage to Orange County Choppers where Keighley busted open her piggy bank to spend every last cent on clothes and memorabilia (photos to come when I get somewhere with a faster internet connection). The showroom/store was located in a strip mall with a wine-n-liquor store, Carmela's Italian restaurant, and a Chinatown Kitchen. Inside were the actual bikes built on the show -- the NASA Space Station Bike, the Santa Bike, the Lance Armstrong bike (but you could only look and not touch, and certainly not swing your leg over them and try Santa's bike on for size). We found the warehouse down the street where the actual work is done, too. By appointment only, the sign on the door said. I wonder how many thousands of people banged on the door before they put THAT sign up?
No, I was not the 1001st...but I did consider it.... :)
