The Swiss Armed Forces perform the roles of Switzerland's militia and regular army. The Swiss Army has has 5% professional soldiers; the rest are conscript citizens 18 to 34 years old. At 18, they get basic training, and then every year 20,000 people go off for 18-21 weeks, like we do with the Reserves. Soldiers keep their own personal equipment, including all personal weapons, at home.
Because of a long history of neutrality, the army does not take part in armed
conflicts in other countries, but is part of several peacekeeping missions
around the world.
