Quarries on the Strzelecki Track
Five km north of Lyndhurst, close to the Marree road, are the ochre pits and quarries, once worked by hand by the Aborginal people who used the ochre for their ceremonial body painting. The ochre from these pits was traded as far north as the Gulf of Carpentaria and south all the way to the coast.
This side trip on the way back from the desert was the last one with all of my favorite camping mates...you can see the four of us in one of these pictures -- me with the Scarecrow (Gavin), the Tin Man (Dan) and the Lion (Joe).
