In Pennsylvania, the big superhighway is still two lanes and goes through Main Street, past houses and the Dairy Queen.

Got stuck behind a trash truck for miles and miles...you know how some people see visions of Jesus in mud puddles or a visitation from the Virgin Mary in a stain on their kitchen wall? Me, I see The Grim Reaper in the dirt on the back of a trash truck. What do you think? Can you see it, or have I lost my mind?

Americana Sign Watch:

One good thing so far is, apparently it's a lot more fun to practice your electric guitar with Harley-Davidson picks....

There's a grocery chain in New York called TOPS. I wasn't sure at first if they would sell nothing but blouses, or nothing but twirly toys, but there was a picture of an apple and a banana by the door, so I took a chance and went in. Should have left a breadcrumb trail...the place was HUGE. I think I passed through a couple of zip codes just going from the produce area to the bakery.

On the trip back, visited the Corning Museum of Glass, housed in a glass building (the urge to throw stones was irresistible....) full of examples of the sublime (fabulously-lit glass pieces bent in interesting ways) and the ridiculous (a crystal baseball bat??? and how did Cinderella dance in those glass slippers without them shattering during The Charleston?)

They had a video showing Lino Tagliapietra demonstrating his glassmaking skills, but when they showed the man at home cooking (you'd think he'd be sick of slaving over a hot oven all day, but there he was, mixing rice with peas in a skillet), I was surprised to see that he used everyday nonstick pans. What? No Pyrex??
